CAROLINA LILY

Fons and Porters Love of Quilting Magazine has a great column in it called "This Old Quilt", by Gerald E. Roy. Have you seen it?In every issue he shows old quilts and discusses them. The Oct. 2006 issue has a beautiful Carolina Lily quilt that he says is a baby quilt. I really love it. I keep threatening to make a Lily quilt, but have not as yet. A few years ago I saw one that I loved at the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival. This is an old quilt also. I love the fabrics, the design, everything! There are lots of variations of this block, and some I like more than others. I don't know what this one is called, but thought you might enjoy taking a look at it.

Gerald Roy has an incredible collection of quilts. He has coordinated exhibits at the New England Quilt Museum and at the Lowell Quilt Festival (MA) that I have really enjoyed. Thanks for sharing this one.

It is one of my favorite sections of the magazine, Marcie. I love the history behind the quilts and admire his collection. I believe he has had themed quilts in one the galleries at the MAQS museum during the AQS show--not sure they were all from his collection or not.

I only came across Carolina lily as a block a few years ago when someone used one as the centre medallion in a round robin... It was very pretty.

I do like that column. I'm always amazed at the quilts he talks about.

I love the lily quilts too. When I've had my quilts appraised at the Nashville AQS Quilt Expo, twice Gerald Roy was the one who did the appraisal and I was so thrilled!

Wouldn't that be wonderful to make a Carolina Lily quilt. Such a great old antique pattern.

It is a fairly unusual Lily as you say, Marcie. I do like it, and maybe it's the combination of piecing and applique..or at least it looks like both to me.
I hope you do make one, even if it's just a four block wall hanging that Gwen Marston is so fond of...it's a lovely pattern.

I like the applique stems on this version.

Such a simple looking, yet graphic block. I think what I like best is the colorations they most often use and the heavy amount of quilting.

My Mom made me a top with a Carolina Lily variation. It's in the book Potting Shed Patchwork and I've had the top for at least a couple years. It's called Winter Lily and I really need to get it quilted - it's beautiful!
