Winter Blues

I know it has been a while, with Christmas, New Year's, etc. all taking a share of our time. I actually have a few things to show, but the thing I am most excited about right at this moment is this:

My granddaughter Becky, mother of the twins, made these darling quilts for her boys! Aren't they terrific? She wrote all about it on her blog. I am just so proud of her. She made two other bed quilts also in big bright colors. Her fabric choices are young and vibrant and suit her.

Becky lives in Salt Lake City, and I am currently in our home in Mesa, AZ. One thing I have noticed is that these two areas are big on the bright, young designers. I personally am into the reproduction fabrics and favor the traditional quilts, leaning toward old fashioned. I'm old and I'm not afraid to say it! Ha! I know I told this story once before, but Becky and I were in a fabric store one day and they had some Judie Rothermel fabric on sale. I bought several yards of this brown print. I told Becky that one day she would inherit all my fabric, and she said, "Well then don't buy that"! I have been laughing about it ever since!

I seriously don't know where I am going to shop here in Mesa. I may be shopping mostly on line or on trips. Can I adapt? I like the modern fabric, but I seriously don't know what to do with it. Pretty funny, huh? I guess that as long as Jo Morton and Judie R are designing fabric, I will be buying it.
I made the little quilt above for my friend Karen Mowery of Sew Primitive. I was able to spend some time with Karen when I was in Atlanta in December visiting my daughter.
Take a close look at this photo and you will see that our clever Karen has put pieces of straws on the pegs for the spools so that she can stack them two high. Genius!

Oh, I should mention that I finally opened a Facebook page for Patchalot Patterns! I would love it if you click LIKE on it!

Best wishes for a very happy 2013!

You are too young to have a granddaughter that makes quilts for her kids! Seriously that makes you a great grandma?!
I love your fabrics too:) But it is nice to see young quilters finding fabrics they like and making quilts.

Your granddaughter's quilts are fabulous.

Take a drive up to Olde World Quilt Store and you'll get a huge treat - right up your alley. :-)

Becky is great! And it is so cool that she is quilting in her grandmother's footsteps.

I'm with you, I like the repros best, but some of the bright and beautiful prints do catch my eye (I like Kate Spain!) Take Darlene's advice and make a trip to the Olde World Quilt store. I haven't been there but have been wanting to whenever I visit AZ. Your granddaughter did such a beautiful job on those quilts, you are rightfully proud. Love your little quilt with all the cheddar there :)

That comment of Becky's is too funny! Give her a few (?) years, though, and I'll bet she discovers the repros! And I say "Thank God" for Jo, and Judy, and Barbara, and all the other great repro designers keeping 'us' happy! :o)

Love that Becky is making quilts, but I'm with you - the reproductions are about all that find their way into my stash. Also love the little quilt you made for Karen - I bet it has given her some smiles.

Love Becky's comments. As she grows older she my begin to appreciate vintage quilts and see what we see.
I hated gardening until I was in my mid 40 's I thought it was what OLD people did. Lol
Happy New Year to you Marcie,

Love the blue quilts... wonderful treasures for the boys. Me too though... I'm partial to reproduction fabric, but I appreciate the beauty of the more modern day fabrics.

There's a large group of ladies from the phoenix area who quilt together (most are not modern quilters). In fact, every Feb. they hold a retreat, people come from all over the country and I know there are still openings. They post at About.com/quilting. This is the link to their current thread. You should be able to read without being a member. But you do need to be a member in order to post.

I think you'd love them. I use to attend the retreat when my daughter lived in Gilbert. I certainly miss getting together with them. They are a GREAT group of women. Hope you'll check them out.

I think I know who Becky gets her eye for design from. What I need to know is where she gets her energy. Looking after 2 small boys AND having time to quilt . . . there must be a special vitamin she's taking. I'd like to order a dozen bottles please, LOL.

I have noticed more SPAM popping up in comments. Do they think they are making friends?

I remember always enjoying The Quilted Apple in Phoenix. A quick Google search shows that they have gone out of business. Guess that means you might just have to cross the border and shop in San Diego -- we have some pretty awesome shops here. Just sayin *s*
